Jacquie Harrison, now a Senior Lecturer in Communication at AUT University in Auckland, completed the research described in this article as part of her doctoral thesis under the supervision of Margaret McLaren, then Professor of Management Communication at the University of Waikato. The article first appeared in "Issues in Writing", Volume 9, Number 2, in 1999. "Issues in Writing" is a refereed journal devoted to the study of writing in a range of disciplines and nonacademic settings and published by the Department of English, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
